Level 1 Diploma in Recycling Activities (GROC1, GRORP1, GROWE1, GROWEC1) CIWM (WAMITAB)
Delivered on site, you will be required to build up a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence in areas relevant to your roles and responsibilities. This will include a number of assessment visits by one of our competent assessors, who will set you tasks, provide mentoring and support as well as being on hand to guide you through the process!
Description
The CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 1 Diploma in Recycling Activities is a flexible qualification designed to confirm occupational competence for specific job roles in the industry or within a particular organisation – these job roles include:
- Transfer station operative
- Recycling operative
- Recyclables collection drivers
- Recycling collection loaders
People already working in relevant roles could be employed by local authorities, waste management companies or third-sector (not-for-profit) organisations.
This qualification is open entry. This means that learners interested in undertaking the CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 1 Diploma in Recycling Activities do not require any other qualifications or levels of attainment to take this qualification. However, learners will need to be employed in a suitable position, or have access to the working environment, as the qualification is assessed ‘on the job’
Qualification Process
This CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 1 Diploma in Recycling Activities is assessed in the work environment, the process requires the Learner to demonstrate he or she has the required knowledge and skills to work at permitted waste management facility.
The qualification process would include a number of visits by one of our competent Assessors.
The first assessment visit will include an induction, to explain the process, as well as the Centre and awarding organisation’s policies, practices and procedures.
Each Learner will need to complete the 5 mandatory units and they will also need to select one of the below pathways, which includes an additional 4 units, also selecting 1 unit from the relevant operational pathway group, resulting in a total of 10 units required to achieve this qualification.
Pathway Unit's Available:
- Collection Pathway (GROC1)
- Reception and Processing Pathway (GRORP1)
- Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Pathway (GROWE1)
Mandatory Units Group A:
- Working safely in the recycling industry (RA1.1)
- Maintain effective working relationships in the recycling industry (RA1.2)
- Maintain standards of service during recycling activities (RA1.3)
- Environmental protection within the recycling industry (RA1.4)
- Manual handling, lifting and moving of loads in a waste environment (WO38)
Collection Pathway (GROC1)
Learners who choose the Collection pathway must complete all Collection Mandatory Units, and then choose 1 unit from the Collection Optional Unit group:
- Collect recyclables and other materials (RA1.5)
- Assist in the safe operation of work vehicles during recycling operations (RA1.8)
- Loading a waste transport vehicle (WO5)
- Communicate with the public and others on recycling activities (RA2.6)
Collection Pathway Optional Units
Learners must choose one unit from this group:
- Dispatch recyclables and other materials (RA1.7)
- Comply with procedure to maintain security of facilities, equipment and materials within the recycling industry (RA1.10)
- Sort and prepare recyclables and other materials for processing (RA1.11)
- Encourage recycling services through promotion (RA2.7)
- Select and use containers for recyclables and other materials (RA2.12)
Reception and Processing Pathway (GRORP1)
Learners who choose the Reception and Processing pathway must complete all units in the Reception and Processing Mandatory Units group, and then choose 1 unit from the Reception and Processing Optional Unit Group:
- Operate equipment for processing of recyclables and other materials (RA1.6)
- Clean and maintain facilities and equipment for the processing of recyclables and other materials (RA1.9)
- Sort and prepare recyclables and other materials for Processing (RA1.11)
- Prepare plant and equipment for processing recyclables and other materials (RA1.13)
Reception and Processing Pathway Optional Units
- Dispatch recyclables and other materials (RA1.7)
- Assist in the safe operation of work vehicles during recycling operations (RA1.8)
- Comply with procedure to maintain security of facilities, equipment and materials within the recycling industry (RA1.10)
- Assist in the maintenance of plant and equipment for processing recyclables and other materials (RA1.12)
- Operate and shut down processing plant (RA1.14)
- Communicate with the public and others on recycling activities (RA2.6)
- Encourage recycling services through promotion (RA2.7)
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Pathway (GROWE1)
These are also the units for the GROWEC1 option used by Computers for Charities, where the CoC certificate will include ‘Computer Refurbishment’ in the title.
Learners who select the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment pathway must choose 5 units from this group:
- Collect recyclables and other materials (RA1.5)
- Operate equipment for processing of recyclables and other materials (RA1.6)
- Dispatch recyclables and other materials (RA1.7)
- Assist in the safe operation of work vehicles during recycling operations (RA1.8)
- Clean and maintain facilities and equipment for the processing of recyclables and other materials (RA1.9)
- Comply with procedure to maintain security of facilities, equipment and materials within the recycling industry (RA1.10)
- Sort and prepare recyclables and other materials for processing (RA1.11)
- Assist in the maintenance of plant and equipment for processing recyclables and other materials (RA1.12)
- Prepare plant and equipment for processing recyclables and other materials (RA1.13)
- Operate and shut down processing plant (RA1.14)
- Communicate with the public and others on recycling activities (RA2.6)
- Encourage recycling services through promotion (RA2.7)
As part of the process, you will be required to answer a minimum 10 question papers (One for each unit), you will also need to demonstrate the requirements for onward reporting of issues identified be it issues with machinery or equipment, unsafe situations etc as well as understanding of PPE, how to respond to environmental incidents to name but a few.
Don’t worry, you will plan each assessment visit with your Assessor to allow time to complete the work required!
When your Assessor arrives on site, he or she will be looking to observe you carrying out your daily duties, asking questions about the tasks you carry out, looking at any relevant documentation and getting you to explain the various processes and procedures.
On completion, the Centre will claim your certificate, which will be scanned, and a copy sent in advance of the original certificate.
