This qualification is open to anyone and doesn’t require you to have achieved any other qualifications previously.

Almost every business produces some form of Hazardous Waste. It is vital to understand the statutory definition of hazardous waste which has been established under the EU Waste Framework Directive. This differs in several respects from the definition of hazardous substances used in health and safety legislation. The quantity is irrelevant in deciding whether a waste is hazardous.

In order to meet the requirements of the CIWM (WAMITAB) Operator Competence Scheme, technically competent managers must sit a Continuing Competence test every two years, to demonstrate their knowledge and skills have kept up to date with changes made across the waste management industry e.g. the introduction of new legislation, technologies and/or techniques. Therefore, all competent persons falling within the Scheme are required to demonstrate ‘Continuing Competence’ by completing a multiple-choice test.

The process starts with a two-day knowledge training course. This course will not only provide you with the knowledge and understanding to complete the written project and associated multiple-choice question test, but it will set you up for a career in health and safety in the waste management sector.
